Pragmatics and Semantics
Many of the current philosophical theories of pragmatics concentrate on semantics. For example, Brandom focuses on linguistic meaning (albeit from a pragmatist perspective).
Others take a more comprehensive perspective on pragmatics, such as relevance theory, which aims to understand the of the processes that lead to an utterance being made by a hearer. However, this approach tends to ignore other aspects of pragmatism, such as epistemic debates over truth.
What is pragmatism, exactly?
Pragmatism is a philosophical outlook that offers a viable alternative to analytic philosophy and continental philosophy. Charles Sanders Peirce initiated the concept and William James extended it. Later, Josiah Royce developed the philosophy. It had a profound effect on areas of inquiry from theology and philosophy to philosophy of science, but also on ethics and politics, as well as the philosophy of language. The pragmatist tradition continues to develop.
The pragmatic principle is at the heart of classical pragmatism. It is a principle that clarifies the meaning of hypotheses through their 'practical implications' or their implications for the experience of specific situations. This leads to an epistemological view that is a form 'inquiry epistemology' based on inquiry, and an anti Cartesian explanation of the rules that govern inquiry. Early pragmatists, however, largely split over the question of whether pragmatism ought to think of itself as a philosophy of science that focuses on a monism of truth (following Peirce), or a broad-based alethic pluralism (James and Dewey).
A central issue for philosophers who are pragmatists is how to understand knowledge. Some pragmatists, such as Rorty are likely to be skeptical of knowledge that is based on'instantaneous experiences. Others, such as Peirce or James, are skeptical of the correspondence theory which holds that true beliefs are those which accurately represent reality.
Other topics in pragmatism are the relationship between beliefs and reality as well as the nature of human rationality, the importance of virtues and values and the nature of life. Pragmatists also developed a variety of theories and methods including those in semiotics and philosophy of language. They have also explored topics like philosophy of religion, philosophy, ethics, science and theology. Some, such as Peirce and Royce, are epistemological relativists, while others argue that such relativism is completely wrong. A renewed interest in classical pragmatism during the latter part of the 20th century resulted in a number of new developments, including a 'near-side' pragmatics that is concerned with the resolution of confusion and ambiguity and the use of proper names, indexicals and demonstratives, and anaphors, as well as a 'far-side' pragmatics that looks at the semantics of discourses.
What is the connection between what you say and what you do?
Semantics and Pragmatics are often thought of as being on opposite ends of the continuum with semantics on the close side and pragmatics on the other. Carston for instance, argues that contemporary pragmatics has at least three principal lines: pragmatickr those who view it as a philosophy in the tradition of Grice as well as those who are focused on its interaction with grammar and those who are concerned with the meaning of utterances. Near-side pragmatics includes issues such as the resolution of confusion and the use of proper names, indexicals, demonstratives, anaphoras and presupposition. It is also thought to cover some issues involving specific descriptions.
What is the connection between pragmatism and semantics?
Pragmatics is the study of meaning within the context of language. It is a subset of linguistics, and looks at the way people employ words to convey various meanings. It is often contrasted to semantics, which examines the literal meaning of words in a sentence or chunk of speech.
The relationship between pragmatism and semantics is a complex one. The main distinction is that pragmatics takes into account other factors that go beyond the literal meaning of words, such as the intended meaning as well as the context in which the utterance was spoken. This gives a more naive understanding of the meaning of an utterance. Semantics is also limited to the relationship between words, while pragmatics is more concerned with the interactions between interlocutors (people who are engaged in an exchange) and their contextual features.
In recent decades the neopragmatism movement been heavily focused on metaphilosophy and philosophy of language. It has abandoned the value theories and metaphysics of classical pragmatism. However, a few neopragmatists are working to develop a metaethics that draws on the pragmatics of classical pragmatism and experience.
Classical pragmatics was first created by Charles Sanders Peirce and William James. Both were influential thinkers who wrote many books. Their works are widely considered to this day.
While pragmatism is a viable alternative to the continental and analytic philosophical mainstream, it isn't without its critics. For instance some philosophers have claimed that pragmatism is simply an extension of deconstructionism and is not an entirely new philosophical concept.
In addition to these criticisms, pragmatism itself has been challenged by technological and scientific advances. Pragmatists, for example, have had a difficult time reconciling their views on science with the the theory of evolution, which was developed Richard Dawkins, a non-pragmatist.
Despite these challenges the pragmatism movement continues to grow in its popularity throughout the world. It is a third option to Continental and analytic philosophical traditions, and has a wide range of practical application. It is a rapidly growing field of inquiry. Numerous schools of thought have emerged and incorporated pragmatism elements in their own philosophy. There are a variety of resources available to help you understand more about pragmatism and how you can incorporate it into your daily life.
